Do not assume the panels caused it

The timing matters. If the leak started soon after installation, the mounting area deserves close inspection. If the panels have been in place for years and the leak appeared after a storm, a slipped slate nearby may be more likely.

Water can also enter above the array and travel behind it.

Mounting systems differ

Some brackets pass beneath tiles or slates and fix to rafters. The roof covering around them needs enough clearance and correct weathering. Cutting a tile badly or leaving a slate lifted can create a route for rain.

Electrical components should not be disturbed by a roofer who is not competent to handle that part of the system.

A useful check
Photograph the area before work starts if you can do so from a safe position. It gives you something concrete to compare with the finished repair.

Access can take longer

Panels obscure the covering and restrict working space. In some cases a panel may need temporary removal by a suitable installer before the roof beneath can be repaired.

Get the access sequence clear in the quotation. Otherwise a simple roofing repair can stall because nobody has allowed for the panel work.

Check cables and penetrations

Cable entries and any roof penetrations associated with the system should be inspected as well. Sealant around a cable is not a substitute for a properly weathered entry detail.

Photographs taken before panels are refitted give a useful record of the repaired roof beneath.

Need somebody to look at the roof?

If you want to ask local contractors about the repair, describe the symptom and include anything you have noticed about the weather or the part of the roof involved.
